Transfer Students

Thinking of Transferring?

Transfer Applicants

Florida Polytechnic University welcomes transfer applications to the university. Students should apply online at floridapoly.edu and arrange to have official transcripts sent from all colleges attended. The Office of Admissions computes a grade point average (GPA) for each institution attended, as well as a cumulative GPA on all college courses attempted. This computation does recognize plus or minus grades and only recognizes grade forgiveness when it is used as part of an awarded statewide articulated Associate in Science (AS) degree or an Associate in Arts (AA) degree from a Florida public institution. Students who have not received an AA, AS or higher will be required to meet freshman admission requirements to be considered for admission.

Applicants must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 and be in good standing as a degree-seeking student at the last institution attended to be considered for admission to Florida Polytechnic University.

Meeting these minimum requirements does not guarantee admission.

Transfer students are required to complete at least 30 hours in residence at Florida Polytechnic University to earn a bachelor’s degree. In addition, students must complete 30 hours in residence at Florida Polytechnic University to be eligible to receive baccalaureate honors recognition at the time of graduation. For additional information see FPU-2.004.

Transfer Process

The standard process for enrollment is as follows:

If the student has or is planning to have an associate’s degree or higher at the time of matriculation:

  • The student submits official transcripts from each postsecondary institution attended.
  • The student submits an online application.

If the students is not planning to have an associate’s degree or higher:

  • The student submits official transcripts from each postsecondary institution attended.
  • The student submits official SAT or ACT score reports.
  • The student submits official high school transcripts.
  • The student submits an online application.

At this point, the application is complete and all required supplemental documents have been submitted.

Admission decisions will be made as soon as those required supplemental documents have been received.

  1. If admitted to the university, The Registrar will review college transcripts to determine applicable transfer credit.  This transfer credit evaluation is then shared with the student, as progression toward degree completion is often the predominant factor in a student’s decision to commit to the university.
  2. The student is required to submit a $200 tuition deposit to officially accept their seat in the incoming class.
  3. The Registrar will create a first-semester schedule for each transfer student who has submitted a tuition deposit, based on each student’s applicable transfer credit.

The Office of Admission will be in regular contact via phone and email throughout each of these steps.  This ensures the student is aware of his or her standing and advances through the process as quickly and efficiently as possible.

Common Prerequisites

Institutions of higher education in the state of Florida, under legislative mandate and through the direction of the Articulation Coordinating Committee, established a list of common prerequisite courses for every degree program. This list is provides students, especially those who plan to transfer between institutions, with information regarding the courses that they will need to take to be admitted into upper division programs.

Common Prerequisites for Florida Poly Programs can be found here:

Common prerequisites should be taken in the first two years of study. The common prerequisite coursework required for a particular program is dependent on the student’s year of matriculation and year of admittance into the upper division. Special guidelines apply to students who transfer from one public institution to another in the State University System or Community College System. For additional information, refer to the college/program description in this catalog, contact a college advisor, or access the Common Prerequisite Manual in the “Manuals” section of the FloridaShines website.

Out of State Transfers or Transfers from Non-Accredited Institutions

Student will be required to provide additional materials to demonstrate equivalency including, but not limited to, course syllabus and sample assignments.

Exceptions to General Equivalency

Since the initial implementation of the SCNS, specific disciplines or types of courses have been excepted from the guarantee of transfer for equivalent courses.  These include courses that must be evaluated individually or courses in which the student must be evaluated for mastery of skill and technique.  The following courses are exceptions to the general rule for course equivalencies and may not transfer.  Transferability is at the discretion of the receiving institution.

  1. Courses not offered by the receiving institution.
  2. For courses at non-regionally accredited institutions, courses offered prior to the established transfer date of the course in question.
  3. Courses in the _900-999 series are not automatically transferable, and must be evaluated individually. These include such courses as Special Topics, Internships, Apprenticeships, Practica, Study Abroad, Theses, and Dissertations.
  4. Applied academics for adult education courses.
  5. Graduate courses.
  6. Internships, apprenticeships, practica, clinical experiences, and study abroad courses with numbers other than those ranging from 900-999.
  7. Applied courses in the performing arts (Art, Dance, Interior Design, Music, and Theatre) and skills courses in Criminal Justice (academy certificate courses) are not guaranteed as transferable. These courses need evidence of achievement (e.g., portfolio, audition, interview, etc.).

Special Agreements

Florida Polytechnic University works with State and Community Colleges to develop special agreements for students from those institutions for some or all of our programs. Presently, the University has an agreement with Polk State College for all of Florida Poly’s programs, and an agreement with South Florida State College for Electrical Engineering. Students at these institutions must work with their college advisors to learn more about these opportunities and ensure they are on the right path to maximize their transfer experience.

Polk State College

Specific terms for admissions must be met to ensure full access to the agreement; however, if other admissions standards are met, the following general equivalencies will pertain.

Engineering (ABET) and Related Programs

The guiding document for this agreement is section II-D of the Florida Common Prerequisites Manual for 2018 - 2019 (CPM.II-D), which specifies the tenets governing the transfer of students from state colleges to universities for undergraduate engineering programs.

(See complete manual: https://dlss.flvc.org/c/document_library/get_file?uuid=4f8695e3-1adc-4631-9e89-9c26fc145b54

Or specifically section II-D.: https://dlss.flvc.org/documents/210036/666312/2016-2017+Common+Prerequisites+Manual+Engineering+Programs.pdf/cc7e2dee-0cd3-4e5e-b16a-8f00ef89d938.)

For purposes of this agreement, “engineering programs” applies to all programs delivered at Florida Poly with the term “engineering” in the degree name and programs for which the university is seeking or currently holds accreditation through one of the accrediting commissions of ABET.org. These programs are bound by the terms of their accreditation to ensure that all courses accepted into the program meet expectations of the accrediting agency and are articulated according to program and university policy. This includes ensuring appropriate prerequisites are met, faculty credentials are appropriate to the courses taught, and course content is sufficiently similar in topics and rigor.

Students completing the 48 hours of common prerequisites will be admitted to Florida Poly engineering programs provided they meet minimum grade requirements.

Limitations

Per tenet #4 of the Common Prerequisites Manual: If a student had to take additional mathematics courses prior to becoming eligible for the initial calculus course listed in the 48 hours, those courses will count toward the A.A. degree, but will be over and above the prescribed number of hours for the bachelor’s in engineering. Similarly, if a student takes foreign language courses at the community college to meet the SUS admissions requirement, those hours will count toward the A.A. but will be outside of the hours for the bachelor’s in engineering. If a student takes the foreign language courses (required for admission) at the university instead of the community college, excess hour surcharges may apply. In addition, credits earned above the 60 hours required for the A.A. degree may not apply toward the bachelor’s degree.
