Master of Science - Mechanical Engineering

Program Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering degree, students are expected to demonstrate the following:

1. an ability to identify, formulate, and solve engineering problems of single or multidisciplinary nature by applying principles of engineering, science, mathematics, and analytics;

2. an ability to acquire and apply knowledge using appropriate, discipline-based learning strategies drawn from relevant coursework and/or research;

3. an ability to apply business fundamentals, develop professional skills, and address complex challenges in the current climate of STEM fields.

Students in the thesis program are also expected to demonstrate the following:

a) an ability to develop methodology of the proposed body of research that produces solutions and further inquiry;

b) an ability to develop and conduct appropriate experimentation with a systematic approach, analyze and interpret data, and use foundations of engineering to draw conclusions.

Degree Requirements (30)

Course-only students complete:

Thesis students complete:

  • Required Courses (9 credits)
  • Electives (21 credits)*
    • Students may take up to 6 credits of engineering management courses.
  • Total credits: 30
  • Required Courses (9 credits)
  • Electives (15 credits)*
    • Students may take up to 3 credits of engineering management courses.
  • Culminating Experience resulting in a thesis (6 credits total)
  • Total credits: 30

* Students may take any 4000-level (subject  to 6-credit maximum and not appearing on undergraduate transcript) or 5000-level courses offered by the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering

Culminating Experience (6 credits, thesis only)

Thesis 1 and Thesis 2 are variable credit courses used by different programs. Mechanical Engineering students must ensure they are enrolled for 2 credits in Thesis 1 and 1 credit in Thesis 2.

Continuing Enrollment for Research

This placeholder course is used to maintain student’s enrollment in the graduate program with the primary purpose of conducting research. Research credits (EGN 5911) may be used in situations where thesis completion takes longer than expected, in addition to the minimum required thesis hours above. Program extensions are subject to departmental approval, and do not extend Graduate Assistantship appointments. Extensions may not exceed two semesters (excluding summers) after successful completion of Thesis 2.
