CGN 2163C - Civil and Environmental Engineering Skills and Design

Credits: 2

Course Description: This course aims to advance students’ knowledge and experience in using engineering tools and professional skills to solve real-world environmental and civil engineering challenges. Students will engage in engineering design activities relevant to infrastructure, environmental sustainability, and water management. The course emphasizes the use of Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software to create detailed models and simulations of civil structures and environmental systems.  The course will include a project focused on water filtration, where students will learn how to design a scalable filtration system. They will explore the principles of hydraulic engineering, analyze fluid flow through filtration media, and optimize the system for different environmental conditions. This project will provide hands-on experience with real-world water management challenges, helping students develop practical solutions for filtration and treatment processes. Some of the technical concepts covered will include:

  • Water quality analysis (turbidity, suspended solids, microbial load)
  • Sustainable design practices
  • Filtration process mechanisms
  • Environmental impact assessment of water treatment systems
  • Structural design and material selection for filtration units
  • Hydraulics and fluid dynamics in water systems
  • Site planning and integration of water filtration into community infrastructure
  • Construction methods for durable and scalable systems

In addition, the course will enhance students’ understanding of design processes and build intermediate civil and environmental engineering skills, preparing them for future open-ended projects and their capstone design course. Professional skills development will continue, with an emphasis on leadership, teaming, and communication in various formats.
