About the Office

The Office of Graduate Studies* serves as a front-facing resource for students, faculty, and staff. Located in IST 2037, students may stop by or schedule an appointment for services including secondary advising, assistantship questions, admissions questions, 4+1 guidance, thesis format/timeline clarification, and graduation requirements. If a graduate student is unsure how to proceed, or who to speak to, an appropriate first step is to meet with the Office of Graduate Studies.

The Office of Graduate Studies also assists students in all forms and approvals which require the Graduate Director signature. General email inquiries may be directed to ogs@floridapoly.edu.

Other Support Offices and Personnel

Though the Office of Graduate Studies is the central hub for oversight of the graduate programs, multiple offices work together to manage Graduate Study at Florida Poly. Below are some of the common offices and personnel graduate students may work with.

Academic Departments

A student’s academic department is their primary “home” in the institution; this is the department that sponsors the track or major within the degree. If you are following an interdisciplinary track like mechanical engineering, then you will refer to that academic department. Typically, students start their first semester with the department chair as their advisor. Some departments may assign students a temporary advisor until they go through the department’s process whereby students are paired with their faculty advisor based on a range of factors, primarily alignment of research interests.

Admissions

Admissions is located on the East side of Campus, and contact info is available at the end of this document. Upon the start of their first semester, students are generally past the admissions stage. However, if they have business yet to complete (particularly if they are an international student) Admissions is available to assist.

Registrar’s Office

The Registrar’s Office is located in the IST on the Northeast corner. The Registrar’s Office is critical to your progression as it is the office where all the important forms are stored that you will need along the way and where all your grades, signatures, and final confirmation of completion of all degree requirements are housed.

Provost’s Office

Dr. Brad Thiessen serves as the provost and executive vice president in addition to acting as the Graduate Director. The Graduate Director’s role is to oversee all graduate programs, and channel the university’s vision into actionable policies. The Graduate Director also works closely with the Department Chairs, faculty, and the Graduate Studies Committee on a range of policy, curriculum, and scheduling matters to make sure that the programs run effectively and deliver quality education.

The most common request of the Graduate Director is approval of various graduate forms. If a student needs something signed by the Graduate Director, they must submit those items to the Office of Graduate Studies who will obtain the signatures or approvals upon the student’s behalf.
