General education is central to student learning at Florida Polytechnic University. It is tied to the University’s mission, core values, and strategic goals. In each undergraduate degree program, the University requires the successful completion of a General Education Program component at the collegiate level. The University’s general education courses support and enhance the core STEM learning and competencies at the institution, providing students with breadth of knowledge, critical thinking skills and writing skills, among other proficiencies.
The University has developed student learning outcomes to demonstrate each of its General Education / College Level competencies in the areas of:
1) Written communication - Students will demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively and to analyze communication critically.
2) Information literacy - Through demonstrating interpretive ability and cultural literacy, the student will confirm the ability to think critically and acquire competence in reflecting upon the human conditions.
3) Scientific reasoning - Students will demonstrate the ability to critically examine and evaluate scientific observation, hypothesis, or model construction and to use the scientific method to explain the natural world.
4) Quantitative reasoning - Students will demonstrate appropriate mathematical and computational models and methods in problem solving, demonstrate an understanding of mathematical concepts and apply appropriate mathematical and computational models and methods in problem solving.
5) Critical thinking - Students will demonstrate the ability to examine behavioral, social, and cultural issues and an understanding of basic social and behavioral science concepts and principles used in the analysis of behavioral, social, and cultural issues - past and present, local and global.
6) Oral communication - Students will demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively and to analyze communication critically.
