Bachelor of Science, Electrical Engineering (Program Description)

Total Electrical Engineering Credits: 120

The Electrical Engineering program is directed towards the practical use of scientific, engineering, and technical principles to meet the objectives of industry, business, government, and the public. Underlying the programs is a recognition that the impact of technology upon the quality of life is increasing and that the proper application of technology is critical to meeting current, emerging human needs, and working with regional industries to develop and increase technically knowledgeable human resources.

The basic required program of instruction in fundamental theory and laboratory practice is balanced by abroad range of electives in such fields as control systems, renewable energy, and electrodynamics and communication. The students, with the counsel and guidance of faculty advisors, design their electives program around their own special interest.

The mission of the program in Electrical Engineering is to provide innovative teaching, research and service and prepare problem solvers, creative thinkers and researchers with science, technology, engineering, and mathematics competitive background focused on the core of electrical engineering.

Accreditation

The Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, www.abet.org.

Program Educational Objectives

Graduates are expected to be prepared with a solid and competitive foundation focusing on the state-of-the art advances in the specialized concentration area. Graduates are expected to be known for their accomplishments and attain the following within a few years of graduation.

  • Demonstrate competency in developing solutions in a specialized area of electrical and/or computer engineering either individually or through interdisciplinary teams.
  • Demonstrate success in technical or business activities through engineering ability, communication, professional, and ethical skills and knowledge.
  • Be distinguished high-in demand engineering professionals as innovators and entrepreneurs.
  • Demonstrate professional growth through post-graduate education, continuing education, or professional activity.

Student Outcomes

By the time of graduation, students in the electrical engineering program should possess the following:

  1. an ability to identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science, and mathematics
  2. an ability to apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors
  3. an ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences
  4. an ability to recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations and make informed judgments, which must consider the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts
  5. an ability to function effectively on a team whose members together provide leadership, create a collaborative and inclusive environment, establish goals, plan tasks, and meet objectives
  6. an ability to develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze and interpret data, and use engineering judgment to draw conclusions
  7. an ability to acquire and apply new knowledge as needed, using appropriate learning strategies.

College Skills (1) & Co-Curricular

All majors are required to complete an approved internship/professional experience prior to graduation.

General Education (41)

Click here to view the complete list of General Education offerings. The State of Florida requires a minimum of 36 credit hours of general education for the baccalaureate degree. The following are required for the B.S. in Electrical Engineering.

Arts and Humanities (6-9)

Students in Electrical Engineering must take 9 credits total from each of the Arts and Humanities and Social Sciences. Three credits are required in American History (Social Sciences) so three or six may come from Arts and Humanities. Additionally, EE majors are required to take IDS2144.

Social Sciences (3-6)

Students in Electrical Engineering must take 9 credits total from each of the Arts and Humanities and Social Sciences. Three credits are required in American History (Social Sciences) so an additional three may come from the selection below or students may elect to take six credits from Arts and Humanities.

Concentrations (12)

Student choose 12 credits from one concentration area.
