EML 4542 - Materials Selection in Design and Manufacturing Credits: 3
Prerequisites: Junior Standing and EGN 3365 - Structure and Properties of Materials and EGN 3331 - Strength of Materials Course Description: This course examines the selection and application of the materials predicated on materials science and engineering case studies covering most engineering applications. The course examines a systematic approach for the development of a new idea or product and facilitate the continuous improvement processes for products currently on the market. The approach is based on evaluating open-ended design problems with respect to the interrelationship between material, shape, function and processes used to produce a variety of products. Through the design process, engineering materials and their properties are explored using the Ashby Materials Selection Charts using case studies and design experiences that focus on materials selection and multiple constraints, the factors involved in materials processing and design, and the use of data sources.
